2010-04-09 - Moldovan acting president meets teachers, students of Balti-based state university
Parliament Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu today met the teaching staff and students of the Balti-based Alecu Russo State University, within a working visit to the Balti municipality, Moldova's second largest city, the parliament's media relations department has said.
The sides discussed expectations from Moldova's leadership, problems the teaching staff and students are confronting with, as well as the social and political situation in Moldova. Referring to the conditions of education of school-leavers coming to study at the Balti University, the president said that they find here what they were dreaming about - a modern education institution, well-trained teachers, education halls, properly equipped laboratories - all the conditions necessary to become high-skilled specialists. We will do our utmost, so that the graduates of the Balti University, as well as of all the Moldovan education institutions have the opportunity to choose the jobs they want here in Moldova, the president said.
Referring to the former communist government's decision to reduce the number of students matriculated on a contract basis, Mihai Ghimpu said that each citizens has the right to decide where to study and in what way, and nobody can limit this right.
The president said that the priority of the present leadership is to restore the economy, to woo foreign investments and to promote democratic reforms, as this gives the young generation one more chance to decent life. «If we have embarked on this path, we should cover it together till the end, and this path is called Moldova's European integration. Now more than ever, Moldova has a favourable context to change things to the better, as it enjoys unprecedented support from the European structures,» the president said.
Referring to the political situation in Moldova and the constitutional crisis, Mihai Ghimpu said that there will be no breakthrough unless Article 70 of the Constitution is changed before an early election is called. He emphasized that nobody is sure that this article will be amended by the present parliament. The president said that another solution should be found in this case - «when the lawmakers cannot find a solution in the parliament, the people should decide what to do». Ghimpu stressed that the solution offered by the presidential commission for constitutional reform - adoption of a new version of the Constitution adjusted to the European norms - is likely to be viable.
Touching upon Moldova's relations with Russia and Ukraine, Ghimpu said: «The Alliance for European Integration committed to have strategic relations with the USA and Russia. We should have good relations with Ukraine, especially on grounds that the Transnistrian conflict settlement depends on the neighbour state very much.» Mihai Ghimpu also said.
Deputy Education Minister Tatiana Poting and the rector of the Balti-based Alecu Russo State University, Gheorghe Popa, attended the meeting.
