2010-04-09 - Austria to back Moldova's visa liberalization efforts

Austria will support Moldova in the process of visa liberalization, Austrian Federal Minister of European and International Affairs Michael Spindelegger told a news conference today.

Foreign and European Integration Minister Iurie Leanca said that talks on the liberalization of the visa regime will be initiated on 15 June 2010.

«First of all, domestic reforms are necessary: adjusting Moldova's diverse standards to the technical criteria established by the European Commission and the EU. There are fields directly involved in this and we will continue to adjust them, and there are sectors which indirectly influence the good development of this dialogue. Today, I discussed with the Austrian minister several practical issues which will help us prepare better for this process,» Leanca said.

Michael Spindelegger said that Austria wants Moldova to get a free visa regime as soon as possible, and it will therefore start dialogue on the matter within the EU.

«I regard this subject as a special wish of Moldova, and we will discuss it within the EU, but I will support the idea that Austria initiates this dialogue with Moldova in the field of liberalization of the visa regime,» the Austrian official said.

Also, Michael Spindelegger specified that Austria will soon step up economic cooperation with Moldova, and Austrian business people will be invited to make investments in Moldova. Spindelegger added that Austria will back Moldova within the Danube strategy.
